A red ribbon in the area: Aids-Hilfe Styria is touring the area

Aidshilfe Steiermark tours with the slogan "I Want to Know It!" through the Weiz area.

There were 58 people in Styria in 2017, who were diagnosed for the first time with HIV infection. This represents an increase of 26% compared to 2016. In order to draw attention to this unpleasant progression and raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, Aidshilfe Styria is touring the Weiz area.

High treatment costs

40% of diagnoses are very late. This means that the sufferers have been carrying the virus for many years, thus burdening their health and possibly endangering others with carelessness. Due to the further development of medical care choices, today's infected people can lead to an almost normal life, but a major problem is that HIV-infected or AIDS-infected patients will be stigmatized in our society, explains Manfred Rupp, head of Aidshilfe Steiermark. In addition, the average cost of care for an HIV-infected person throughout his or her life will range between 400,000 and 500,000 euros.

Tour Weiz area

By the World AIDS Day, which takes place on December 1st, Aidshilfe Styria in the Weiz region wants to make the tour "I Want To Know!" to realize and inform people through lectures, free and anonymous trials, poster campaigns and red ribbons in public buildings.
During the lecture "AIDS, is this something else for us?" will be discussed on November 15th at Paracelsusapotheke Weiz and on November 27th at Kulturkeller Gleisdorf on the subject. Health counselor Christopher Drexler stresses that the disease should not be forgotten: "Because of the treatment options, HIV infection is now treatable, but we must not put off this disease."

Anonymous checks

In Graz you can taste anonymously and free of charge at Aidshilfe Steiermark. The test result is achieved within three to five days. A quick test allows a result after half an hour. 80% of the tested people are today from Graz and the surrounding area, with a tour of the areas that want to make people there to gain access to an HIV test. "I hope the regional tour will raise awareness of this important issue and reduce exposure to people affected by the infection," says Rupp.
