CUF Viseu Hospital sensitizes the population with a free risk assessment for diabetes

On the day of World Diabetes Day on November 14th, CUF Viseu Hospital will have nursing staff available to the public between 2:00 pm and 6 pm to assess the risk of this condition. Participation in this action is free and does not require a previous appointment.

According to the Directorate-General for Health, it is estimated that in Portugal diabetes affects 13.3% of the population aged 20 to 79, 44% of whom are not aware of the disease. Approximately 200 new cases are diagnosed daily in Portugal. More than 1 million Portuguese suffer from diabetes and it is estimated that about 2 million Portuguese are in a "pre-diabetes" condition.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease, which may have various causes and is characterized by elevated blood sugar (glycaemia). Anyone who may suffer from diabetes, however, exposure to risk factors such as hypertension, cholesterol, family history or overweight may increase the likelihood of their occurrence.

Disease awareness is at the heart of this initiative, which aims to alert the population to this scourge that continues to invade the lives of the Portuguese.
