11 million children under the age of five die from pneumonia by 2030, according to a new study.

More than 880,000 children – usually under two years of age – died of pneumonia only in 2016.

Based on predictions based on current trends, more than 10.8 million children under the age of five will die from the disease over the next 12 years, according to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. and the Redd Barna Relief Agency.

Among the countries affected will be Nigeria and India, where 1.7 million children will die of the disease, according to the study. The study also estimates that 700,000 children will die in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Researchers have concluded that 4.1 million children can be saved if the vaccination program increases and more people have access to antibiotics.
