For a moment it seemed that the brand new turf at Gelredome had given Vitesse wings. The home team fell convincingly from the starting blocks and after just two minutes was 1-0 in the scoreboard. After a good run by Armando Broja, Loïs Openda puts the ball behind goalkeeper’s back.
On the sidelines, coach Thomas Letsch must have believed that the leak was at the top of his team. Vitesse only got one minute from the last five games. This ugly run started with a 4-1 defeat at VVV-Venlo, when top scorer Giorgos Giakoumakis took it on his hips and achieved the goal four times.
Vitesse had paid close attention to the way Giakoumakis had to be placed in the band this time. This helped that the top scorer of the Greek Eredivisie was not in position this time, but the phenomenon of Crete took only nineteen minutes to score.
After Torino Hunte has been awarded a penalty by Riechedly Bazoer, the ball goes just wide. A job done by Giakoumakis. Again the 23rd competition goal of the Greek, who also made three in the KNVB Cup. With this, Giakoumakis has balanced his entire production in 25 games for VVV-Venlo in his previous eight seasons as a professional with Platanias, Episkopi, AEK Athens, OFI Crete and Gornik Zabretze.

How fragile is the confidence in Vitesse after the recent bad run became apparent after the equalizer. The level of play of the home team collapsed like a brick and a similar battle took place, with VVV with ball-capable players such as Zinedine Machach and Meritan Shabani threatening on the bench.
Only after the break did Vitesse catch the opponent again. The VVV was locked in their own half and it was Bazoer, who as a free defender with a solo through the enemy defense and a hard hit, gave back to the home team. VVV could no longer escape the pressure of Vitesse and Sondre Tronstad decided the game with a long shot (3-1). It was the first goal scored by the Norwegian midfielder for Vitesse. Armando Broja took care of the final string with 4-1, just the picture of the result earlier this season in Venlo. The Englishman with Albanian roots now has nine goals in the Eredivisie in his name, making him Vitesse’s top scorer.
With its first league victory since a home win over Groningen on January 23, Vitesse finished fourth in the Eredivisie rankings against Feyenoord. The Rotterdammers can return to the tables on Sunday with a win at AZ. VVV-Venlo remains in the safe fifteenth position, but is having a bad weekend because the Limburgers are one of the few teams in the lower left empty. FC Emmen and PEC Zwolle (all three points) and RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag (both one point) again collected the necessary points.
