From March 1, home appliances have a new energy efficiency label

From 1 March this year, the changes to the European Union (EU) energy efficiency label will take effect in various categories of home appliances. If the double label has been affixed to the products since November 1, last year, then now there will be only one, the representatives of “Electrolux Latvia” informed the “Tava Māja” portal.

In the following article, Roles ņšboliņš, Electrolux Latvia product expert, explains how to not only browse the product range in the future, but also how to choose energy efficient home appliances.

Why change? According to experts, the purpose of the new label is to help consumers better identify the differences between technologically advanced home appliances. The higher the efficiency of the daily device, the less it will consume resources – electricity, water and even additional detergents, thus making it more friendly to both the wallet and the environment.

What products will be with the new label?

The changes concern washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators, – these product categories must be on the market for duplicate labels from 1 November last year, both old and new. In turn, the full transition to the new label will take place from March 1 this year.

The current EU energy efficiency label was introduced gradually between 1994 and 2004. It is widely recognized and used throughout Europe – 8 out of 10 consumers consider it when buying home appliances. The unified system allows consumers to make up-to-date choices for efficient and sustainable home appliances. However, most devices today belong to the upper category and there are no longer products that meet the lower categories. This result is positive, but it makes it difficult to find the best products.

Differences between the old and the new label

The new energy efficiency label scale has modified efficiency, introduced stricter ecodesign requirements and new efficiency elements, and introduced a new test method. In addition, Category A to C criteria will be reviewed regularly in the light of technological and market developments in order to avoid further changes in scale.

The previous label had four categories A: A to A +++, which is confusing as it did not have a high, medium and low energy scale. Therefore, the new scale assumes that the existing devices have been moved to lower categories from categories A to C, while classes A +, A ++ and A +++ have been abolished. It is also important to have only a few devices in category A, thus leaving room for future technological development.

It is important to note that being in the lower class does not change the power consumption of the device – the performance of the device remains the same, only its rating changes, ie the letter on the label.

What should you consider when choosing a new home appliance?

When buying an appliance from the affected categories of household appliances – washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators – it is recommended that you carefully read its features and technical specifications to meet your requirements and needs. “Tava Māja” reminds that it is worth not only studying the product descriptions, but also the reviews of the online store, so as not to “cover” the scammers.
