A production based on the play “The Rhinos” by the world-famous French playwright Eženas Jonesko, of Romanian origin, premiered at the Daile Theater. Thus, according to the idea of the Hungarian director Ildiko Gāšpara, it has become a modern work that speaks of existential fear, manipulation of people, enforcement of the opinion of the majority and loss of self.
The Daile Theater sets big goals for the new season and tries to surprise the audience. The absurd comedy of the world-famous playwright Eženas Jonesko “Degunradži” premiered for three and a half hours. Hungarian director Ildiko Gāšpāra uploaded it along with Daile Theater actors and Latvian set designers and costume designers Krista and Reini Dzudzilo.
Explaining why it is worth uploading Jonesco’s works today, the director stressed: “Because it is very modern. It is completely at that time: climate catastrophes, epidemics, human rights defenders, political movements, populism, feelings of impending catastrophe and revelation, a desire to change something in the direction of civilization. It mainly concerns the existential fear, to lose oneself. All this is revealed by the work of Jonesco. But with a very high dose of humor. And it is very important because it does not make you depressed, but it makes you laugh and think about how the media or social networks treat us “.
For the first time, the whole mechanism of the stage started at the Daile Theater for the application of majestic scenography, which has a special role in the performance.
“We are talking about what Marta Staņa and Eduards Smiļģis once did when they were working in this theater and building this earth, through which we then collaborate and create visual drama,” explained set designers and costume designers Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo. “We perceive the scene as one of the actors.
Here, structurally, everything is based on the fact that the scene itself or the mechanism of the scene itself is this rhino, it is this animal, the mechanism or structure that everyone is afraid of, while at the same time sinking deeper and deeper into it. “
Jail Žagars, director of the Daile Theater, admits that the theater must have the courage to take risks, because this production is very expensive and the irrational drama has a high degree of risk.
“It’s time to try, it’s time to experiment, it’s time to try things that could not be done other times,” gaagars said. “Secondly, we had huge ambitions and a huge commitment, whatever it is, but we have to make every effort to make the project happen. But, of course, the most important element in any art event is the talent of the artists themselves, and in this case Ildiko Gaspar as director, Hungarian group, choreography, sound design… and of course video art, and our excellent world-class artists Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo, which only proves the fact that we Latvians here in Latvia can create a convertible, truly world-class product. Because the visual code, the visual costume for this show is really unique “.
The creators admit that this is a complex production, which also requires more than usual from the actors of the Daile Theater.
“In this show, in a minute, I could count the 50 details being played, which I have to think about in a continuous parallel to some reality,” revealed actor Tom Velicko. “And this show consists of a lot of details, a very natural, very complex show.”
Actress Vita Vārpiņa, on the other hand, remarked: “I like to come back during my studies, because at my age in the theater there are very rare moments when you are forced to do what you have not done or you are forced to learn or try something new. And this is the period when, while enduring the casting, we started with etymologies as during the studies and in fact the first act consists of the etymologies we created. But believe me, after 20 years in the theater is not easy! You have to push and break yourself a lot. Honestly, I feel very happy right now because I’m doing something else, I’m still learning and it ‘s a huge pleasure for me. This kind also requires the actor to be very flexible, because he is like a toy, like a child toy, like cartoon characters “.
The greatest value seems to be that this show goes beyond the context of the show on human rights issues, “us and them”, that this show is completely related to what is happening in Latvia and in the world. And this is the highest duty of the Daile Theater – to always be in touch with time, and this is a first and very good hit “, said the actor Artūrs Skrastiņš.
The first spectators have also managed to appreciate the show. Juris Vaidakovs said after the premiere: “I recommend – endure the first act until the end, because what is happening there on stage due to scenography, movements, technology has surpassed everything that has been so far.
