Great players, great winners, players in form. The line-up of Team USA’s Ryder Cup looks awesome.

The 43rd edition of the event will take place at Whistling Straits from September 24, live on Sky Sports, as Team USA looks to claim the trophy it lost at Le Golf National in 2018.

The team has six automatic qualifiers based on the US points list after the BMW Championship and six captain selections by Steve Stricker. Without Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, and six debuts, there is a lack of experience, but this is offset by the presence of most of the world’s top players in the team.

We take a close look at the Ryder Cup records of those who will represent the US team in this year’s competition…

Collin Morikawa – automatic qualifier

There are occasional questions about a player making his Ryder Cup debut. How will he manage the pressure? The crowd? The occasion; But Morikawa has shown in the last year that a lack of previous experience can also count little. He won his first appearances in both the PGA 2020 Championship and the 2021 Open Championship and was the first player to qualify for the USA Team. Dustin Johnson – Auto Qualifier

Johnson did not have the best year of his career, winning only once on the European tour and losing his place at the top of the world rankings. He also had some difficulties with his player, but he will give a veteran presence to the team and he will have to be a formidable opponent, especially in singles, where his record is 3-1-0. He had a winning streak in the Ryder Cup until he went 1-4-0 last time in Paris.

Bryson DeChambeau – automatic qualifier

In 2018, DeChambeau was one of four choices made by US captain Jim Furyk, this year he was the third player to qualify automatically. He claimed his first race at the US Open 2020 and narrowly missed out on winning the BMW Championship as he lost to Patrick Candley after a six-hole playoff. His long-running feud with teammate Brooks Koepka could be something to watch out for, even if Stricker says the couple will set it aside for the week: “They assured me that the team and the country and everything else it happens. this is their top priority. They said it would not matter, and I believe them. I trust them. As for me, he is asleep. DeChambeau’s only two matches with his teammates in the Ryder Cup were with Mickelson and Woods.

Brooks Koepka – automatic qualifier

Appearances: Two (2017, 2019)

Record: Win 4 Lost 3 Half 1

Koepka has been one of the most consistent touring players in recent years, especially in the big companies, when he had 12 top seven finishes in his last 16 appearances. It was an impressive 3-1-0 in his Ryder Cup debut at Hazeltine in 2016, but he withdrew from the Tour Championship with an ankle injury that seemed to be happening when he hit a root. He downplayed the issue, saying: “I had problems with ’17, ’18, so make sure everything is fine.”

Justin Thomas – automatic qualifier

Record: Win 4 Lost 1 Half 0

With just one win in his name this season – for The Players in March – Thomas is not going to the Ryder Cup in top form. However, he has shown that team events often bring out the best in him. In his debut at the Ryder Cup in Paris he went 4-1 and in combination with the Presidents Cup in 2017 and 2019 he was 10-3-2. Expect to see him in a pair with Jordan Speight after they went 3-1 together last time in the tournament.

Patrick Cantlay – automatic qualifier

This may be Cantlay’s debut in the Ryder Cup, but he is the player in form who goes to Whistling Straits. He has won the PGA Tour four times this year – the first player to reach that number by Thomas in 2016/17 – and eliminated world No. 1 Jon Rahm to win the Touring Championship that ends the season. He has experience from the Presidents Cup – 3-2 in 2019 – and his game must match the course for the 43rd Ryder Cup.

Xander Schauffele – captain’s choice

This could be summer for Schauffele. The 27-year-old won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in August and is now set to compete in his first Ryder Cup. He showed that he can combine it with the best, as evidenced by six finishes in the top-10 in the big ones since the last Ryder Cup, when he narrowly lost his place to Tony Finau. He will have to starve to succeed since he did not make the team in Paris.

Jordan Spieth – captain selection

Appearances: Three (2014, 2016, 2018)

Spieth was ranked in the top 60 in the world when the initial dates for the Ryder 2020 Cup passed last year, but he has returned to form in the last 12 months. He has five top 10 finishes this season, including third place in the Masters, and will be a major figure in the US team. At Hazeltine in 2016 it went 3-1-1 and can boast of a strong four-ball record in three Ryder Cups with 5-1-0.

Tony Finau – captain’s choice

Having the last captain selection in 2018, Finau was one of four Americans to finish the week with a winning record. His hopes of making the team this year seemed to fade earlier in the summer, but his form has improved since ending a five-year drought with a win at The Northern Trust. He finished the season in 11th place in the Tour Championship and should be strong around the Whistling Straits.

Harris English – Captain selection

Not only have the English not played in the Ryder Cup in the past, but they have also not played in the Presidents’ Cup, so the team’s experience will be fresh for him. While there have been questions about whether it hit the Whistling Straits well enough, there is no doubt that it was in good shape this year. He has won two titles and came close to third at WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last month.

Scottie Scheffler – Captain selection

The 2020 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, although he has not yet won the PGA Tour. However, his record in major leagues over the last two years is extremely stable, finishing in the top 20 and in six appearances with the best fourth-place finish in last year’s PGA Championship. He was in the top 10 again this year in the PGA Championship as well as in the US Open and Open, while he was second to Billy Horschel in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play where he beat Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm and a man appears for the big occasion.

Daniel Berger – selection of captain

Berger won at Pebble Beach earlier this year and was a consistent performer in 2021 with a top 10 in the US Open and Open.
