One in two Greeks is dealing with the government electronically

The number of Greeks who trade with the government electronically is steadily increasing, as according to ELSTAT, 49.7% of citizens aged 16-74 used e-government services in the period April 2017-March 2018.

This figure is increased by 4.9% compared to what was recorded a year ago. It should be noted that eGovernment services include all transactions with public services over the Internet, citizens' obligations (tax declaration), official documents (identity card, birth certificate), education services (enrollment in schools or higher education institutions); public health services (appointment scheduling, medical certificates, hospital or patient examination certificates).

As shown by the ELSTAT Information and Communication Technologies Research survey for 2018, 98% of those who did not use eGovernment services (eg online tax return) said that the submission was made on behalf of other people, 8.1% did not have the knowledge to use the corresponding website and 0.3% was worried about the protection and security of personal data.

The ELSTAT survey also highlights the high degree of use of new technologies by Greek households. According to its findings, about 8 out of 10 Greeks using the Internet in the first quarter of 2018 (76.5%) were connected by a portable device, a 1.6% increase compared to the corresponding period of 2017. From 72.2% used mobile or smartphones, 16.5% laptop, 12.7% tablet, and 0.9% other devices (e.g. media player, portable game console, smart clock).

According to the survey, a total of 8 out of 10 households in Greece have access to the Internet from their home (76.5%). Indeed, this percentage has increased by 100.8% in the last decade (2009-2018), compared to 20.17, an increase of 7.8%. According to ELSTAT data, broadband utilizes 76.1% of all households. More than 7 out of 10 Greeks (72.2%) aged 16-74 made use of the Internet in the first quarter of 2018, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2017.

According to survey data, Internet use on a regular basis, that is, at least once a week, makes 96.6% of those who used the internet in the first quarter of 2018. More than twice a day, the Internet uses 90.5 % of regular users. The most used device for access is mobile, as 81.2% of the internet accessed population has chosen to connect.
