November 10, 2018 – More than 40 former Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) officials and members of the intelligence service have been detained, according to Reporter.
The administration of METEC and members of intelligence services were jailed yesterday, 9 November 2018, the report said.
The Ethiopian government has so far not revealed whether someone is being held by METEC, much less that they were former METEC officials.
They were detained while they met in the Gerji district in Addis Ababa, former Imperial Hotel, which the company bought and was renamed Amoraw Building, according to sources.
He is believed to be in custody at the Federal Police's provisional detention center, according to sources.
METEC has been in hot water for some time for what current government officials believe was deep in corruption and mismanagement.
In August of this year, METEC was terminated by the work of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) for delay and mismanagement caused, according to government officials. Read here about this METEC story.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself stressed that it was not only the primary factor behind GERD's delays but also that Italian company Salini Impregilo, which is the main contractor of the GERD, has sought compensation for delays.
In October of this year, and maybe in an attempt to restore its name, METEC, a company controlled by military operations, announced it is going to be reorganized.
In addition to the pending reorganization, METEC also changed its name to the National Metal Engineering Corporation (NMEC), pending the approval of the government.
Brigadier Kinfe Dagnaw, who was head of the company as director until he resigned in April 2018 after the election of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as prime minister in the ruling party, was recently found in the media defending METEC.
