Canadiens report price extension plan to Kraken after goalkeeper resigns without move

Following in the footsteps of the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup final, Carey Price was left unprotected for the Seattle Kraken expansion plan.

Price could become the face of the 32nd NHL franchise if general manager Ron Francis and his staff decide to take on one of the biggest hockey contracts.

The league released the protected lists of all 30 teams eligible for the expansion plan on Sunday morning. Seattle will select one player from each team except Vegas – who just went through this process in 2017 – and will announce these options in the expansion plan on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Price agreed to waive a clause in his contract to be exposed, so that Montreal would protect the cheapest spare Jake Allen, but his targeting ability, off-the-shelf trades and ties to the Pacific Northwest could do the trick. an attractive choice even with the salary limit reaching US $ 10.5 million for another five years.

The 2015 MVP and Vezina Trophy winner is the biggest unprotected star to pick for Kraken, but there are many other talents.

The wing of St. Louis Vladimir Tarasenko is an option two years away from lifting the Stanley Cup after asking the Blues for a trade. Calgary exposed the captain and defender who won the Norris Trophy 2019, Mark Giordano. And Carolina surprised Nino Niederreiter.

The price is the most interesting for Seattle, and the location probably helped persuade the short 34-year-old to drop the no-move clause to be revealed. He played for the Western Hockey League Tri-City American, a few hours by car, and his wife, Angela, is from Kennewick, Wash.

Maximum salary space allowance

That could make the price a natural cornerstone for Kraken to build, as did the Golden Knights with goalkeeper Marc-André Fleury, who was a freshman to win the Cup with Pittsburgh. Price and the Canadiens lost to Tampa Bay in five games in the final.

The back-to-back champion Lightning easily has the deepest team of players available. Top winger Ondrej Palat, lead Alex Killorn, center-back Yanni Gourde and young defender Cal Foote are all exposed. Squeezed by the ceiling that remains stable at $ 81.5 million, they could also reach a deal with Kraken to get Spokane native Tyler Johnson and the $ 5 million price tag for three more seasons.

Seattle has all the power and advantage of a car park.

“The only thing we think is extremely, extremely valuable in this environment is the space cap,” Francis said on Saturday. “We have $ 81.5 million in playing space, so this is definitely something we want to make sure we try and take advantage of progress.”

Seattle has some minimum thresholds to meet in the expansion plan, including selecting at least 20 players with a contract for next season with salaries totaling at least $ 48 million. Kraken must select at least 14 forwards, nine defenders and three goalkeepers.

There is no shortage of options:

  • In addition to Price, Dallas’ Ben Bishop, Florida’s Chris Driedger and Washington’s Vitek Vanecek are among the available goalkeepers. Driedger is a pending free agent, but Kraken has an exclusive negotiation window until Wednesday to sign him and others to a new contract.
  • Colorado leader Gabriel Landeskog, Toronto’s Alex Kerfoot and Jared McCann, Pittsburgh’s Jason Zucker and Philadelphia’s James van Riemsdyk are among the Lightning trio, with Niederreiter and Tarasenko as the most productive promoters available.
  • Tarasenko Blues teammate Vince Dunn, New Jersey PK Subban’s staff and Washington’s Justin Schultz are among the unprotected defenders, a position that is not so deep in high-level talent. This is designed.

“The teams knew we were coming and had four years to prepare,” Francis said.
